The week after Halloween is interesting. You know you shouldn’t eat one more piece of candy, but it’s so hard to resist. It’s just sitting there waiting to be eaten.

So, you decide to take one (or two) more pieces. You pop a sweet into your mouth and – ouch, that was not what you were expecting.

There was a crunching sound, but it didn’t feel like that piece of hard candy breaking up. You think that you may have cracked a tooth. The pain is quick and it’s getting worse.

This is a dental emergency. This is a time to call Davenport Dental Group in Laredo, TX. You can reach either of our offices by calling 956-242-6745 for the Junction Drive location or 956-517-2695 for our Winfield location. We will make every effort to schedule a same-day appointment or next-day appointment for you.

Step One: Stop The Pain

A cracked tooth can painful, especially is the crack is deep. This can expose the innermost parts of the tooth. That can cause increased sensitivity or a tooth infection if bacteria reaches the pulp, which is soft tissue inside your tooth.

You should rinse your mouth with warm water as soon as you are able. This cleans the area. Then you should apply a cold compress or ice pack to reduce swelling.

You will want to avoid touching or wiggling the cracked tooth. You want to avoid biting down or chewing with that tooth as well. And do not try to remove the tooth yourself.

You want to see a dentist as quickly as you can. We encourage you to save our phone numbers for this reason.

Step Two: Come See Us

Once you come to our office, we’ll do everything we can to stop your pain. This is our first objective. We can apply a local anesthetic and administer dental sedation at our office. Inhaled sedation (which you may know as laughing gas) can take effect in a matter of minutes. This can help you feel calmer and prevent you from feeling pain, too.

With a cracked tooth, it may require a root canal treatment to remove infected tissues from your tooth. If so, we also offer same-day dental crowns to cap your tooth at the end of this procedure.

If the tooth can’t be saved, it will need to be removed. We recommend replacing it soon. In that situation, we can discuss your replacement options and make a follow-up appointment to restore your smile and your bite.
