Have you ever noticed that celebrities almost always have perfectly straight, pearly white teeth? While some may owe their gorgeous grins to genetic luck and/or meticulous oral care, many actors have a “movie-star smile” with a little (well, a lot) of help from veneers. In fact, veneers have close ties with Hollywood. They were first created by Charles Pincus, a California dentist, for the singular purpose of improving actors’ smiles.
So it’s no wonder that veneers are still popular among the Hollywood set — and are now increasingly common for regular people, too. Because anyone can benefit from a showstopping smile. Your face may never appear on a movie screen, but your confidence will improve, your social life will pick up, and you will no longer be embarrassed to smile. And that’s a true Hollywood ending (or beginning, as the case may be).

What Are Veneers?
Veneers are extremely thin porcelain covers that are bonded permanently to the fronts of your teeth. If there is one cosmetic dentistry procedure that beats all others in its versatility and ability to transform, it is veneers. They take your smile from embarrassing to downright dazzling. They are tooth-colored and astonishingly lifelike. And they are durable, working their magic for decades.
Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?
Teeth whitening gives you a brighter smile. Braces and ClearCorrect fix misaligned or crooked teeth. Tooth bonding hides small imperfections and blemishes. Dental veneers, on the other hand, can cover all of these problems with one procedure. You may be a good candidate for dental veneers if:
- You have small blemishes, like chips and tiny cracks, in your teeth
- Your teeth are badly stained. While teeth whitening is a great option for many people, severe stains may not respond to the whitening gel. With veneers, you can get the white teeth you’ve been hoping for.
- You have gaps in your teeth you’d like to cover.
- You have minor (and purely cosmetic) alignment issues or mildly crooked teeth.
- You have slightly overcrowded teeth (cosmetic only)
- You have more than one cosmetic issue you’d like to fix. Rather than undergoing several procedures, you may be able to correct them all with veneers!
There are a few things to keep in mind if you are thinking about getting veneers. You should be in good oral health before considering any cosmetic dental procedure. Your enamel should be strong and healthy. While veneers do cover minor cosmetic orthodontic issues, you are not a good candidate for veneers if you have very crooked teeth. Break yourself of bad habits like chewing on your nails, grinding your teeth, and munching on ice, lest you break your beautiful veneers. And if you want your veneers to last a long time, it’s essential to practice good oral hygiene habits. Be sure to brush twice per day for 2 minutes at a time and floss daily.
Types of Veneers
At Davenport Dental Group, we offer traditional porcelain veneers, plus three types of no-prep and minimal-prep veneers: Lumineers, daVinci, and DURAthin.
Traditional porcelain veneers are custom-made to fit your teeth perfectly, and the process takes a few visits to our office. First, we must remove a small layer of enamel from your teeth to enable the veneers to fit properly. This is painless (done under local anesthesia), but irreversible. So you will have to have veneers on your teeth permanently. We will then prep the surface of your teeth for placement, and securely attach the veneers. You can get veneers on just one tooth or many.
Our no-prep veneers can be bonded directly to the tooth surface — no need to remove any enamel beforehand. No-prep and minimal-prep veneers are faster and easier to place than traditional veneers, plus because no enamel is removed, they can be worn on a temporary basis. However, because they are so thin, they may not be as effective as traditional veneers for covering prominent imperfections.
Are you ready for your close-up? We know you are. Whether you have dreams of becoming a movie star or not, you deserve a celebrity-worthy smile.
