Baby’s First Appointment

The American Dental Association recommends that babies see the dentist for the first time as soon as their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. Because even that first tooth is vulnerable to cavities and decay!

If you’d like, you can hold baby on your lap as we examine her teeth and gums. Starting dental visits from an early age is about keeping baby’s mouth healthy, of course, but it’s also about getting her used to the routine of going to the dentist.

Try to schedule the appointment for a time when baby is well rested, and give her a light meal beforehand (brushing teeth afterward, of course)! Think of it as a fun experience, and your enthusiasm may rub off on baby!

Dental Sealants

People of all ages can get dental sealants, but they’ve been shown to be especially useful in preventing tooth decay in children. According to a report by the Centers of Disease Control, kids without sealants have three times as many cavities as kids with sealants. The procedure reduces the likelihood of cavities in molars by an astonishing 80%.

The technique is inexpensive, painless, and simple. After thoroughly cleaning and drying the teeth, we will use an acidic solution to rough up the surface of the enamel. This enables the sealants to adhere properly. We will then apply the sealant to the chewing surfaces of the teeth, typically the back molars. The plastic-like sealant creates a physical barrier that protects the tooth enamel from harmful acids.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is vital for oral health. It prevents cavities and tooth decay by remineralizing and strengthening the enamel. Fluoride may be obtained through a variety of sources, including certain foods, toothpaste, and fortified tap water.
