What Is Zoom Teeth Whitening?

Zoom Whitening is an in-office bleaching treatment used to lighten discoloration of enamel and dentin. This procedure uses the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to accelerate the bleaching process and activate the whitening solution we apply to your teeth. The solution is 25 percent hydrogen peroxide, making it far stronger and therefore more effective than any over-the-counter whitening treatment.

What makes Zoom Teeth Whitening so effective is that as the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin of your teeth to bleach the stained material, leaving the structure of your tooth unchanged.

We start the procedure by covering your lips and gums, leaving your teeth exposed. We then apply the Zoom whitening gel to your teeth. It is left on your teeth for 15 minutes while the Zoom light is activated. The light penetrates your teeth to break up the stains and discoloration.

We apply the gel for three 15-minute sessions, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. We then immediately apply a fluoride paste-gel to your teeth to reduce sensitivity. The entire procedure takes less than an hour.

To qualify for Zoom Teeth Whitening, we will need to conduct a full examination of your teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy. We will also discuss your oral hygiene routine and lifestyle habits to make sure you will benefit from this whitening treatment. This allows us to determine what whitening product or treatment is best for you. Not all patients are approved for Zoom Teeth Whitening.

Causes of Tooth Staining and Discoloration

Many factors can contribute to tooth staining, but the most common culprits of discoloration include:

  • Medication – Many over-the-counter and prescription medications can change the color of your teeth, causing them to become yellow or bluish-gray. By telling us what medications you take, we can pinpoint which ones may be contributing to the staining of your teeth.
  • Aging – As you get older, the enamel of your teeth wears thin, allowing the yellow or brown color of the dentin underneath to show through.
  • Injury – Trauma such as an injury can damage or crack your teeth, causing them to become stains.
  • Drinks – Dark drinks like coffee, red wine, and tea are well-known for their ability to stain your teeth, but they’re not the only ones. Fruit juices, soda, and other drinks can also damage your teeth and cause discoloration.
