Studies show that many people fear the dentist more than flying, heights, and even spiders! We understand if you’re among them – you may have had a bad experience, or you may just be afraid of the unknown. Whatever the cause of your dental anxiety, the Laredo, TX dentists at Davenport Dental Group have worked hard to design an office that will make you feel safe.Dr. Vallone on Relieving Dental Fears and Anxiety Read Transcript
One of the reasons many patients don't go see the dentist is, obviously, they're afraid of coming and sitting in the dental chair. They've either had traumatic experiences when they were younger, or there's an overall anxiety of what exactly is gonna be done; people are a little hesitant to have their mouth worked on. Here in our office, we start off with a very welcoming, warm attitude when a patient comes in. We try our best to calm them down and relax them, and let them know exactly what type of treatment is needed. With all our experience here in the office, we've pretty much seen everything. We let the patients know that we're not here to try to inflict more pain, we're here to relieve their pain. If we can calm them down and relax them, and we get them in the chair, we offer nitrous oxide sedation, which is a form of relaxation, before we place any sort of anesthetic that can help any sort of apprehensive patient or phobic patient.
It's mainly a dialogue, a discourse with the patient, where we let them know what we plan to do and how routine so many of these treatment services are. So many patients are afraid of the unknown, they're afraid of what exactly we're going to do to them, and they think the worst, and in reality it's not. And so we convey that message to them, and the patients who allow us to work on them and trust us, almost every single patient at the end of treatment says, "I don't know why I was so afraid to come in. I wish I would have come in sooner. This is just not as bad as I was making up in my head."
Some of the ways we combat dental anxiety and fear include:
- Technology that minimizes pain while working quickly and quietly
- Blankets and pillows so you can feel warm and cozy
- Televisions in every operatory so that you can enjoy a distraction.
- Our Winfield office also provides wireless headphones you can connect to your phone. Enjoy a podcast or your favorite tunes while we work!
Both of our locations are staffed with friendly folks who will do everything possible to make you feel comfortable. Schedule an appointment (longer times available by request) at our Junction Drive office by calling 956-242-6745 or in Winfield at 956-517-2695.
Get Pain-Free, Judgment-Free Dental Care
Of those surveyed, thirty-six percent of adults reported that pain is the number one factor in their fear of the dentist. Our patients don’t have to worry – we use local anesthesia to make sure you won’t feel pain during your procedure.
Some patients are nervous because they’re afraid their dentist will judge them. That will never happen at Davenport Dental Group. Our doctors and dental team put our patients first, and our only concern is your comfort and happiness.
If you need a little more help feeling comfortable, we offer nitrous oxide – also called laughing gas – a light type of dental sedation to help you relax during your treatment. Nitrous oxide is easy and safe to use (no injections!) and is great for patients of all ages, including children.
