The tooth grinding is a problem that we notice a lot. It's a huge problem where patients truly destroy their teeth for the grinding of tooth to tooth contact. We control it by using a mouth guard to separate the teeth so that you cannot have tooth to tooth contact. Most tooth grinding takes place at night time while we sleep, so you wear the night guard at night time. If you don't stop the grinding by separating the teeth, over time, your teeth will get shorter at a minimum, or you will break them, possibly to the point that you lose one or more teeth. Then if they get shorter over time, it ages you more quickly. You'll look older than you really are with short teeth.
What is TMD?
TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder, is characterized by dysfunction associated with the TMJ (jaw joint). This dysfunction can be caused by a variety of things, including stress to the joint, inflammation, or injury. Because of the large range of causes, the symptoms can also vary (see below). TMD can be a debilitating condition. Pain in your face and head is hard to ignore – it can cause difficulty concentrating and may affect your work or school.
The good news is that we can help. Contact our office to schedule an examination. Don’t suffer through the pain!
How can I tell if I am suffering from TMD?
TMD can manifest in a variety of ways depending on the cause and affected area. If you are suffering from TMD, you may experience any combination of the following symptoms:
- Jaw pain
- Popping or clicking jaw
- Difficulty chewing
- Facial pain
- Neck pain
All of these signs can mean that your TMJ is irritated or injured. Please schedule a visit to our office for an examination to determine how we can help.
How can TMD be treated?
To treat TMD, we can craft a special mouthguard or splint designed to temporarily adjust your jaw position. This change in position will relieve the stress on your TMJ and ease your discomfort, allowing the joint to heal.
I have regular migraines and headaches. Can you help me?
Yes! Migraines and headaches can be really tough symptoms of TMD to deal with. Give us a call for a full examination and treatment recommendation. You don’t have to suffer through every day with head pain.
I grind my teeth. Can you help me?
Yes! If you grind or clench your teeth unconsciously (called bruxism), we can help you. We can create a mouthguard to help stop the grinding or clenching and protect your teeth from damage.
